Kathmandu- Telecom operators face falling income as traditional services decline and ISPs expand. They are now exploring new business models.
Nepal Telecom has revived discussions to boost data use through streaming and OTT bundling. Data consumption has remained flat for years, while ISPs have increased market share.
The company has reopened talks with Netflix.
Source of the Nepal Telecom company says initial discussions have taken place at the business level, not policy level.
Past talks failed over a minimum revenue guarantee. Netflix had demanded a high fixed payment regardless of subscriber numbers. That blocked a deal.
'If introduced, OTT billing in Nepali rupees could expand digital payments and lift telecom data revenue. The current talks remain early stage with no clear outcome,' that official added.
'Such discussions are routine and often stall before reaching agreement.'
