Kathmandu- Anjan Shrestha has been elected president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the country’s main private sector body. He moves up after serving as senior vice president and will formally assume office on Thursday.
Shrestha secured a clear majority in the executive committee. Results for the remaining committee positions were also announced.
Shrestha, has pledged to put forth maximum efforts for accelerating economic prosperity in the nation.
Talking to RSS in brief today, Shrestha who assumed the Presidency of FNCCI, an umbrella organisation of the private sector, said that ensuring entrepreneurship and investment security will be a top priority during his term.
His rise caps more than two decades of involvement in FNCCI politics. He had earlier faced setbacks in internal contests, but stayed active within the organisation.
Shrestha represents the Laxmi Group, a business house that began in Pokhara and expanded into multiple sectors in Kathmandu. The group operates in dairy, packaging, automobiles, steel, and food production. It employs around 3,200 people and plans to raise that to 5,000 within five years.
The group was built under the leadership of Ganesh Bahadur Shrestha and is now run by his sons Sunil, Anjan, Nirajan, and Nirakar. Among them, Anjan is the only one active in FNCCI politics.
He first gained visibility through the NADA Automobiles Association of Nepal, where he served as president. He then rose within FNCCI from vice president representing the commodity sector to senior vice president, and now president. His tenure will last three years.
Shrestha’s early years were modest. His family once considered relocating from Pokhara to Nepalgunj in search of better prospects. As children, he and his brothers made and sold traditional sweets to support the household.
The business began with Rs. 2,400, including a small loan. A sweets making machine brought from Banaras helped start production. The family opened Laxmi Sweets Shop in 1973, which later grew into a diversified industrial group.
The group’s products, including confectionery and dairy items, now reach international markets. It operates more than 40 brands under its portfolio.
