Kathmandu- The government has extended the validity of driving licenses from five to ten years through an amendment to some Nepal Acts.
The House of Representatives passed the bill, which now moves to the National Assembly. If approved without changes, it will go to the President for authentication before taking effect.
The Motor Vehicles and Transport Management Act, 2049 (1992) previously set the license validity at five years. The amendment updates this to ten years.
Although discussions began after the smart license system launched in 2015, the legal change had not occurred until now.
The bill was registered on May 9, 2023, sent to the relevant committee on September 15, 2023, and returned to the House on April 26, 2025. The House passed it on Tuesday.
