Kathmandu- Minister of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Deepak Khadka, emphasized the urgent need for global adoption of clean cooking solutions.

During his address at session 'Global Adoption of Clean Cooking Solutions' at India Energy Week 2025, New-Delhi, Minister Khadka reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions. 

He  outlined Nepal’s ambitious targets to accelerate the transition to clean cooking, including installing electric stoves in 25 percent of households by 2030, distributing 500,000 improved cookstoves by 2025, and establishing 200,000 household biogas plants and 500 large-scale biogas plants by 2025.

The Minister noted that Nepal’s National Adaptation Plan 2021 envisions 50,000 domestic biogas plants, 300 large-scale biogas plants, and one million clean cooking stoves by 2030. Additionally, the country’s 16th Five-Year Plan sets ambitious targets for expanding the reach of biogas and electric stoves, with support from the Green Climate Fund, which has provided a USD 21.12 million grant for clean cooking initiatives.

Despite progress, Khadka acknowledged that more than half of Nepal’s population still relies on traditional fuels, while electric cooking adoption remains below  one percent. He called for enhanced collaboration with multilateral institutions, climate financing mechanisms, and international development agencies to bridge this gap.

'Clean cooking solutions not only reduce carbon emissions but also improve public health and economic productivity,' Khadka stated.
