Kathmandu – Imports and sales of electric vehicles are rising sharply in Nepal. China produces every type of EV, from established global brands to unbranded manufacturers.

China has more than 300 EV brands. More than 40 Chinese EV brands are now available in Nepal. Established automobile companies, new business groups, and local dealers are competing to become official sellers of Chinese electric cars, microbuses, and vans.

China is aggressively expanding its footprint in the global EV market. Manufacturers and sales agents are appointing official distributors to push volumes. Nepal is directly affected by this strategy. More than half of the EV brands imported from China into Nepal come through agents rather than original equipment manufacturers.

The long-term future of Nepali companies importing vehicles through agents and presenting themselves as official sellers remains uncertain. These companies do not receive service guarantees from manufacturers. They depend on aftermarket spare parts that are expensive, irregular in supply, and often unavailable when needed. This makes timely servicing difficult for consumers.

The race to secure dealership rights has encouraged imports of almost every type of EV. Vehicles with unverified production quality, unsupported testing reports, and left-hand-drive models converted into right-hand drive at retrofit plants are entering Nepal. The country lacks proper testing facilities. The Department of Transport Management approves imports based only on documents, without physical inspection or performance verification.

China’s export push and the local scramble for dealership status have flooded Nepal with EVs of uneven quality. The market will determine which brands survive. However, without testing tools and minimum import standards, the state is losing foreign currency and facing the risk of growing automotive waste.

In 2025, Nepal imported more than 20,000 passenger and commercial EVs. Many of these were brands that sold fewer than 50 units in a year. In the same year, more than 40 new Chinese EV brands entered the Nepali market, including pickup trucks. Except for one or two brands, none achieved triple-digit annual imports.

Some established brands and business groups have invested heavily in service infrastructure, ensuring timely support for customers. In contrast, hundreds of brands have little or no long-term presence in Nepal and face possible closure even in China. Brands sold only in Nepal and nowhere else face an especially uncertain future.

Some of these brands operate quality service centres. BMW vehicles are imported by Laxmi Premium Motors, which runs a service facility in Tinkune.

Ford vehicles were once sold in large numbers in Nepal. GO Automobiles operates a world-class Ford service center. Although sales declined after Ford exited India, GO Ford has committed to uninterrupted service and spare-parts availability.

Brands such as Great Wall Motor, Mitsubishi, Zeekr, and Jeep have been imported for years by large business houses. These brands also have hundreds of internal-combustion vehicles on Nepali roads, which helps ensure continuity of parts supply and service.
