Kathmandu- Lufthansa Group, the European aviation giant, has appointed Society International Travel Services as its General Sales Agent (GSA) for Nepal, aiming to strengthen its presence in the South Asian market.

The Lufthansa Group—which includes Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, and Austrian Airlines—has partnered with Society International to represent its interests in Nepal.

 

Sangita Sharma, general sales manager for Lufthansa in India, emphasized the importance of this collaboration.

'Our partnership with Society International, a company with a strong track record, is a key step in expanding Lufthansa’s reach and enhancing our services for customers. This collaboration will help us tap into Nepal’s growing market and contribute to our overall sales growth,' she said.

Lufthansa has a deep-rooted history with Nepal’s aviation sector. Tribhuvan International Airport, inaugurated in 1955, saw its first jet aircraft—a Lufthansa Boeing 707—land in 1967. While Lufthansa has remained active in Nepal through consultancy and other services, it hasn’t operated direct flights to the country in recent years.

Ravi Chandra Singh, chairman of Society International Travel Services, expressed optimism about future possibilities. 'If our partnership strengthens and conditions become favorable, we will work towards launching direct flights from Kathmandu to Frankfurt,' he shared.

However, Nepal’s aviation sector remains on the European Union’s air safety blacklist. Until this restriction is lifted, the possibility of Lufthansa operating direct flights to Nepal remains uncertain.
