Kathmandu- Patan Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has regained its historical charm with the recent restoration using traditional Telya bricks.

In a move to restore the site's authenticity, the Lalitpur Metropolitan City has replaced the previously installed Chinese bricks with locally produced Telya bricks, investing approximately Rs 15.2 million in the effort.

These historic bricks, which date back to the Malla period, are celebrated for their strength, durability, and aesthetic appeal.

Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan stated, 'Telya brick is an indigenous brick that is both very bright and durable. We laid these new Telya bricks to protect our heritages.'

He added that the Chinese bricks, which were originally laid during the coronation of King Birendra Shah, had deteriorated significantly over the years and have now been fully replaced.

Local resident Upendra Kumar Shrestha praised the project, noting that Patan Durbar Square has become 'cleaner and more beautiful' and calling it a 'positive initiative' by the Metropolis.

The local government has affirmed its commitment to continue the maintenance and reconstruction of the Durbar area, ensuring its originality is preserved for future generations.-RSS
