Kathmandu – Hills around the valley, where one can complete a trek within a single day, have lately become popular among city dwellers.
Such destinations, a little away from the hustle and bustle of the city, offer not only the joy of walking in nature but also health benefits, leading to an increase in visitors.
For those looking to enjoy a day hike, there are dozens of destinations around the valley, including Bhotechaur, Kattike Bhanjyang, Nagarkot, Sundarijal, Shivpuri, Pharping, Champadevi, Chandragiri, Godavari, Phulchowki, Panauti, Bhaleshwar, Anantalingeshwar, Dalchowki, and Namo Buddha.
Among these, Manichud stands out.
A serene pond shaped like a kamandalu (water vessel), scattered chaityas and temples, open meadows, traditional rest houses, surrounding green hills, and far-reaching Himalayan views all add to Manichud’s charm.
Just 6 kilometers from Sankhu Bazaar and perched at an altitude of 2,230 meters, it makes for a rewarding scenic getaway.
Local lore holds that the place is named Manichud because a king once ruled from there. On Janai Purnima, a fair is also held in Manichud, drawing religious pilgrims.
In ancient scriptures, Manichud is mentioned as Mrigendra Parbat and is also known as Shankhachura, a section of the Shivpuri hill range. It is believed that four of the 64 sacred Shiva lingams revered in Hinduism—Kageshwar, Manichudeshwar, Yogeshwar, and Narayaneshwar—are located here.
The hike begins from the ancient town of Sankhu, passing through Bajrayogini. One can climb the temple stairs or take an uphill trail leading directly toward Manichud. From there, after about a two-hour walk via Ghumare Chaur, one reaches the office area of Shivpuri National Park. Continuing further straight leads toward Sundarijal, while climbing through the forest trail takes one to Manichud.
Manichud is also a popular destination for cyclists. From Manichud, travelers can continue on to other attractions such as water springs, Gurjebhanjyang, Vishnudwar, Bagh Dwar, Nagi Gumba, Shivpuri peak, Chisapani, and Bhotechaur. However, these destinations require more than just a one-day trip.
