Nepal achieves breakthrough in Banana Wilt Disease Control

Kathmandu- Nepal has achieved a major breakthrough in diagnosing and preventing the spread of Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (TR4), a new and highly destructive strain of banana wilt disease, scientists at the Nepal Agriculture Research Council (NARC) announced today.

At a program held in Kathmandu, Researcher Dr. Ram Khadka said early efforts since Poush 2080 BS have saved Nepal’s banana industry from major losses.

A control method using chemical and biological treatments has been developed, and a full disease management package is underway with support from the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Dr. Kalika Prasad Upadhyay, NARC spokesperson, said the disease was first detected in Kailali in Bhadara 2080 BS. Since then, NARC has worked with the Ministry of Agriculture and other stakeholders to contain its spread.

NARC Executive Director Dr. Dojraj Khanal stressed integrated farming as a solution to such challenges. FAO Representative Dr. Ken Shimizu praised Nepal’s timely response and progress.
