Kathmandu-Since 2019, global electric vehicle sales have surged. Earlier, EV sales were limited to a few countries and grew slowly. By the end of 2025, EVs held a strong share of new car sales worldwide.

European countries such as Norway, Denmark, and Sweden recorded very high EV adoption. Among Asian nations, Nepal also showed notable growth, where EVs made up 73 percent of total new car sales in 2025.

Automakers have increased EV production. Global acceptance of EVs has grown. Charging infrastructure has expanded. Consumers now better understand range anxiety and resale value. Price parity between internal combustion engine vehicles and EVs has also increased buyer confidence. Technological progress has further encouraged both manufacturers and consumers.

In 2019, EV sales share remained in single digits in most countries. By 2025, EVs accounted for 97 percent of new car sales in Norway, while Nepal ranked second with 73 percent.

According to Visual Capitalist, EVs accounted for over 50 percent of new car sales in many countries in 2025. The ranking is based on data from the International Energy Agency and Ember.

EVs include battery electric vehicles and plug in hybrid electric vehicles. Governments worldwide had introduced incentives to promote EV adoption, though these incentives are gradually declining.
