NTB and Film Board signed agreement to promote tourism through Films, Cannes 2026 participation secured

Kathmandu-The Nepal Tourism Board and the Film Development Board have signed a four point memorandum of understanding to promote Nepal’s tourism through films.

The agreement ensures Nepal’s official participation in the Cannes Film Festival 2026, the organisation of an international film festival in Pokhara, the launch of an audio visual storytelling campaign, and the production of promotional materials focused on film tourism.

The agreement was signed on Wednesday at the Nepal Tourism Board by Chief Executive Officer Deepak Raj Joshi and Film Development Board Chairman Dinesh Raj Dahal, known as Dinesh DC. Senior Manager Surya Thapaliya said the agreement falls under the approved programmes and budget of the fiscal year 2082 83.

Under the agreement, Nepal will establish an official pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival to promote Nepali films and tourist destinations in the global market. Authorities also plan to organise a film festival in Pokhara to develop the city as a centre linking film and tourism activities.

Speaking at the programme, Chairman Dinesh DC described the collaboration as the start of a long term partnership. He said Nepal will ensure regular participation at Cannes to strengthen the global presence of the domestic film sector. He said film shooting locations often gain recognition as tourist destinations after production. He added that joint efforts will support Nepal’s goal of strengthening its tourism industry.

Chief Executive Officer Joshi said film tourism remains a priority to position Nepal as the Land of Memorable Stories. He stressed the need for policy reform, simplified filming permissions, and stronger institutional coordination. He said the partnership will help promote destinations with strong tourism potential in international markets. He also noted that the Tourism Board participates in 50 to 60 international forums each year and can collaborate with the film sector in major global events.

Officials said the agreement will promote film inspired travel, support joint participation in global exhibitions, and position Nepal as a competitive destination for audio visual production. They added that the initiative will attract visitors to lesser known destinations, generate jobs, support local economies, and strengthen cultural exchange.
