TikTok to promote Nepal's tourism in 80 countries

Kathmandu -Here is good news for Nepal's tourism as the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) is set to promote Nepal’s tourism in 80 countries worldwide through the popular social media platform TikTok.

For this purpose, the NTB and TikTok’s Singapore office will sign an agreement on Tuesday.

The promotional content produced by the NTB will be uploaded on TikTok following the  agreement. And  TikTok will help boost this content through its feeds in 80 countries.

This will enable Nepal’s tourism to gain global exposure, according to  Deepak Raj Joshi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NTB, adding the NTB will not need to make any financial contribution for the agreement.

'Since TikTok is a globally popular platform, we believe it can help us introduce Nepal to the world, which is why we are moving ahead with this agreement,' CEO Joshi said.

Representatives from TikTok’s Singapore office will arrive in Nepal on Tuesday to sign the agreement.

Similarly, TikTok’s global CEO, Shou Zi Chew, is scheduled to visit Nepal in November. He is also set to meet Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, according to the NTB.

TikTok’s global headquarters are located in Los Angeles, USA, and Singapore, while its parent company, ByteDance, is based in Beijing, China.

In Nepal, TikTok has already completed the process of official registration. The government had requested social media platforms to be formally registered under the Social Media Management Guidelines, following which TikTok established its representation in Nepal.

Earlier, November 13, 2023, the government had banned TikTok, accusing it of spreading obscenity. However, the ban was lifted on August 22.

Now that TikTok is officially registered in Nepal, it has also opened the way for revenue collection from the platform. Currently, activities related to Nepal are being managed through its Singapore office.
