Kathmandu-Umesh Shrestha has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Nepal Press Council. According to a Cabinet decision made on July 8, he was appointed to the position.
The newly appointed chairperson received his letter of appointment today from the Minister for Information and Communication, Dr. Bikram Timilsina.
Speaking after his appointment, Shrestha said that although the nature of the media has changed significantly, the law governing the Press Council has become outdated and needs to be revised to reflect the changing media landscape.
He stated that one of his top priorities will be the effective implementation of the Journalists' Code of Ethics and further strengthening the system of self-regulation in journalism.
Expressing his commitment to serving as a bridge of trust between the government and the media sector, Chairperson Shrestha said that the Press Council will remain active in protecting press freedom while promoting responsible journalism.
