Kathmandu-Customers of banks and financial institutions in Nepal can now close their bank accounts through mobile or web applications without visiting a branch.
The Nepal Rastra Bank has introduced the provision by amending the Unified Directive 2082 issued for Class A, B and C licensed banks and financial institutions. The amendment removes the mandatory requirement for customers to be physically present at a branch to close their accounts.
Under the revised directive, banks must close an account if a customer submits a request either at a branch or through a mobile or web application. Before closing the account, the bank must transfer the remaining balance to another account held by the same customer at a bank or financial institution specified by the customer.
The central bank said the measure is aimed at reducing the number of inactive accounts in the banking system.
The revised directive also instructs banks and financial institutions to simplify the process of reactivating dormant accounts.
