First serving US Diplomat summits Everest

Kathmandu- In a historic achievement for both mountaineering and diplomacy, Mike Harker, Public Affairs Chief at U.S. Embassy Nepal, successfully summited Mount Everest on May 20, 2026, at 9:10 AM, becoming the first serving American Foreign Service Officer to reach the top of the world’s highest peak.

The summit marks a symbolic milestone ahead of Freedom 250 — the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence — reflecting the American spirit of determination, resilience, and exploration.

Undertaken in his personal capacity, Harker’s Everest expedition concludes a 20-year journey that began with a trek to Annapurna Base Camp in 2006, where he first developed a deep connection with Nepal and its mountains.

The achievement also highlights nearly eight decades of friendship between Nepal and the United States, while emphasizing the role of sustainable adventure tourism in strengthening global ties and supporting local economies.

Harker credited Nepal’s Sherpa community for the success of the climb, praising their courage, world-class mountaineering expertise, and dedication in the Himalayas. He stressed that preserving Everest remains essential to protecting both the mountain’s fragile environment and the livelihoods of Himalayan communities for future generations.
