Kathmandu- On September 8 and 9, the Department of Transport Management was severely damaged by a fire during the Gen-Z movement.

The blaze destroyed all buildings within the Minbhawan premises, forcing the department to temporarily operate from an open space inside its compound.

While gradually resuming services, the department is actively repairing the damaged buildings.

However, the fire destroyed its license printing machines, smart cards, and documents, and damaged the central server, which halted the EDL and VRS systems.

In response, the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has instructed the department to complete all necessary procedures and restart license distribution within two months.

After obtaining approval from the Ministry of Finance, the department plans to procure a new printer, estimated to cost Rs 50–60 million, through a fast-track process.

A ministry official confirmed that tender documents are being prepared and will be announced this week.

Minister Kulman Ghising has directed the department to resume license printing and related services as soon as possible.

Despite the damage caused by vandalism and arson, all license-related services remain suspended.

It will take at least another month to repair the server and replace the necessary equipment. In the meantime, the department is currently procuring computers, printers, and other materials while renovating its main building.

Interestingly, despite the server damage, all license data remains intact. Approximately 500,000 blank smart cards were found safe and likely printable, while over 20,000 printed licenses and 100,000 blank cards were destroyed.

The department handles approximately 6,000–7,000 license applications daily, and nearly 3 million applications are still pending for printing.

While 42 provincial offices provide license services nationwide, none can operate until the central server is restored, as all processes depend on the centralized system.
