Kathmandu- The government has warned to shutdown  Facebook, if failed to register in Nepal within a week. 

Minister for Information and Communications Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has said Meta's access to Nepal will be disrupted if the company is not officially registered here.

During his participation in a department-level interaction on the right to information organised by the National Information Commission here today, the Minister Gurung said the Meta, tech giant company that owns social platforms such as Facebook, Messenger and Instagram did not respond the government's letter for officially getting registered in Nepal.

'If it fails to ensure the registration within a week, it will be shut,' he warned.

According to the Minister, it is not ethnical to have unwillingness to follow the laws of the respective country when the company is doing its business.
As he said, efforts are underway from the Ministry's secretary level to make the Meta fix its center for Nepal.

 he Ministry of Communication and Information Technology now requires all social media platforms operating in Nepal to formally register, appoint a Grievance Handling Officer, and set up a Compliance Monitoring Officer to oversee self-regulation. As of now, only TikTok, Viber, and Weetok have completed the process.
 

The ministry has emphasized that unregistered platforms will face restrictions under Subclause (7) of Clause 3 of the directive. This move is seen as part of the government’s broader efforts to regulate digital platforms, ensure accountability, and address concerns related to misinformation, online safety, and data security.

The enforcement of this regulation could have significant implications for global tech giants and emerging platforms operating in Nepal. The government has urged all concerned entities to adhere to the guidelines to avoid service disruptions.-RSS
