Gorkha – Birendra Lake in northern Gorkha has become a popular stop for trekkers on the Manaslu route. The lake lies beside the scenic Samagaun village, one of the highlights of the Manaslu trek.
At an altitude of around 3,691 metres, locals say the lake has been shrinking in recent years. Among the natural attractions of Chumnubri Rural Municipality, Birendra Lake is known for its striking beauty.
The lake was named after King Birendra’s visit in 1977. Before that, it was called ‘Yamcho,’ a name now rarely used. For the mountain people, nature is sacred. To honour the late king, residents of Samagaun renamed the lake after him.
A few years ago, during a visit by Bahrain’s Prince Sheikh Mohammed Hamad Mohammed Al Khalifa, locals renamed Pangboche Hill as ‘Royal Bahrain Peak.’ Yet most still prefer the original name, Pangboche. Birendra Lake, however, has fully embraced its new name over the years.
Steep rocky cliffs surround the former Yamcho. Snowy peaks shine above. Visitors often pile stones near the lake, perhaps out of curiosity or faith. The stacked stones add a quiet charm to the place.
Many visitors come not only for photos but also for a sense of cultural connection. The lake holds memories that seem to endure with time.
