Kathmandu – Nepal received a record Rs 1.723 trillion in remittances in the fiscal year 2081-82, accounting for 28.6 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
This is the highest share of GDP contributed by remittances since 2072.
In 2072-73, remittances had reached 25.5 percent of GDP, but the share gradually declined, dropping to 20 percent by 2078-79.
The trend reversed in 2080-81 when the figure rose back to 25 percent, and in the last fiscal year it jumped past 28 percent.
Experts say this surge is due to two main factors: slow economic growth at home and an increase in Nepalis going abroad for work.
With this inflow, Nepal continues to rank among the world’s top 10 countries with the highest remittance-to-GDP ratio.
Remittances have also strengthened the country’s foreign exchange reserves, which have now surpassed $19 billion.
