Kathmandu - Nepal exported electricity worth Rs 17.5 billion to India and Bangladesh in a single year.

In the last fiscal year, 2024-25, Nepal successfully exported electricity worth over Rs 17.5 billion to India and Bangladesh.

According to the Nepal Electricity Authority, electricity worth approximately Rs 17.19 billion was sold to India and about Rs 267 million to Bangladesh within a year. The total export amount exceeded Rs 17.46 billion, marking a significant increase compared to the previous year.

Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Deepak Khadka said this achievement in electricity trade represents a major milestone in Nepal’s journey towards energy diplomacy and economic prosperity.

 He said that this economic progress is significant not just in terms of export volume but also in improving trade balance.

Last year, Nepal imported electricity worth around Rs 12.92 billion from India. However, the volume of imports has been gradually declining. 

Minister Khadka stated that this trend has supported Nepal’s transition from a net importer to a net exporter of electricity.

Nepal’s electricity export network is not limited to India alone. Under a tripartite agreement with Bangladesh, Nepal has been exporting 40 MW of electricity, with potential for further expansion in the future. 

Electricity is being sold to Bangladesh at 6.40 US cents per unit, contributing positively to foreign currency earnings.

Targeting the monsoon season—when water flow and production increase—Nepal has been exporting electricity to the Indian energy market (day-ahead and real-time market) at competitive rates, which has yielded significant benefits.

 Additionally, regular supply is maintained through a medium-term agreement via India’s NVVN.

Currently, Nepal exports over 700 MW of electricity daily to various states in India.

Nepali electricity now reaches Bangladesh through the 400 kV Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur cross-border transmission line and the Bahrampur-Bhedamara line located at the India-Bangladesh border.
