Sagarmatha Sambaad concludes issuing 25-point declaration

Kathmandu- The first edition of the Sagarmatha Sambaad  'Climate Change, Mountains and the Future of Humanity' that concluded on May 18, has issued 25-point declaration.

The declaration reaffirmed global commitments to the Paris Agreement, the UNFCCC, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, while emphasizing the need to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C.

It recognized the vital role of mountain ecosystems in maintaining water security, biodiversity, clean energy, and sustainable livelihoods.

Despite contributing minimally to global emissions, mountain communities are among the most affected by climate change, facing glacier loss, extreme weather events, and threats to food and water supplies, it pointed out.

The Sambaad called for increased international climate finance, including the establishment of a dedicated fund for mountain countries, and stressed the need for equitable access to funding mechanisms.

It also promoted clean energy, science-based solutions, and stronger regional cooperation. Inclusive participation, especially of youth, women, indigenous groups, and local communities, was highlighted as essential in shaping climate policies.

The declaration concluded with a unified call for urgent global action and expressed appreciation to the Government of Nepal for launching Sagarmatha Sambaad as a permanent platform for global climate dialogue.

The  summit was kicked off on May 18 aiming address the urgent climate crisis, particularly its impact on mountain regions.
