Social media like Facebook, X, Instagram could be ban in Nepal next month

Kathmandu-The Nepal government has issued a firm warning to social media platforms: register within 30 days or face a nationwide ban. This means that Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram  and other social media platform could be blocked in the country if they fail to comply with the newly enforced Directives for Managing the Use of Social Networks, 2023.

The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology now requires all social media platforms operating in Nepal to formally register, appoint a Grievance Handling Officer, and set up a Compliance Monitoring Officer to oversee self-regulation. As of now, only TikTok, Viber, and Weetok have completed the process.

The ministry has emphasized that unregistered platforms will face restrictions under Subclause (7) of Clause 3 of the directive. This move is seen as part of the government’s broader efforts to regulate digital platforms, ensure accountability, and address concerns related to misinformation, online safety, and data security.

The enforcement of this regulation could have significant implications for global tech giants and emerging platforms operating in Nepal. The government has urged all concerned entities to adhere to the guidelines to avoid service disruptions.
