Kathmandu-Two senior United States officials visiting Nepal within a week signal a clear shift in Washington’s approach. The focus has moved toward deeper engagement with the government led by Balendra Shah and a stronger push for private sector partnerships.

Samir Paul Kapur concluded a three day visit on April 21. His meetings focused on bilateral ties, economic cooperation, and technology partnerships.

Days later, Sergio Gor arrived in Kathmandu as Special Envoy under Donald Trump. The timing stands out. High level US visits to Nepal have been rare and often part of wider South Asia tours. Two visits within a week point to direct and sustained attention on Kathmandu.

During his visit, Gor met Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal. Talks focused on expanding Nepal US relations, with emphasis on trade and investment.

He also held a meeting with Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle at the Ministry of Finance. Discussions covered economic partnership and development cooperation.

Gor also visited Everest Base Camp by helicopter before his official meetings.

His schedule includes political and institutional outreach. He is set to meet Rabi Lamichhane and Nepal Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel.

Despite the increased engagement, neither Kapur nor Gor held meetings with Prime Minister Shah.

The visits highlight a policy shift. The US is now prioritising private investment and technology cooperation over traditional aid.

The closure of USAID programmes globally has reshaped Washington’s approach. Direct financial assistance is being replaced with investment led engagement.

The new strategy focuses on trade, production, and private sector investment. Areas of interest range from technology services and AI to agriculture and equipment.

The recent visits reflect this transition. Washington is positioning itself for long term economic engagement in Nepal through business and innovation rather than aid.
