Nepal's strong external sector: Forex reserves climb to$23.08 billion

Kathmandu-Nepal's external economy depicted remarkable robustness, driven by significant remittance inflow, foreign exchange reserves and substantial surpluses in both the current account and Balance of Payments.

Publishing the Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation today, Nepal's gross foreign exchange reserves have surged by 18.3  percent, reaching $23.08 billion in mid-March, up from $19.50  billion in mid-July 2025. 

This strong reserve position provides significant import coverage; based on eight  months of 2025-26 import data, the banking sector's foreign exchange reserves are sufficient to cover the prospective merchandise and services imports of 18.5 months.

The current account maintained a healthy surplus of Rs 552.85 billion in the review period. This represents a substantial improvement compared to the surplus of Rs 197.03 billion recorded in the same period of the previous year, highlighting improved trade balances and sustained remittance inflows.

The Balance of Payments (BOP) also remained in a strong surplus, reaching Rs 658.35  billion in the review period. This is a notable increase from the Rs 310.37 billion surplus reported in the corresponding period of the previous year, indicating overall financial stability and robust international transactions.

Meanwhile,  remittance inflows increased 37.7 percent to Rs.1449.65 billion in the eight months of  current fiscal year  compared to an increase of 9.5 percent in the same period of the previous year.

During mid-February to mid-March (Falgun month), remittance inflows stood at Rs. 188.64 billion. In the same period of the previous year, such inflows were Rs. 151.19 billion.
