Nepse extends losing streak, falls nearly 20 points amid weak investor confidence

Kathmandu — Nepal’s stock market remained under pressure on Thursday, with the Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) index declining by 19.67 points to close at 2,601.92.

The benchmark index has now fallen for two consecutive trading sessions after rising by 24.57 points to 2,651.68 on Tuesday. It had dropped by 30.09 points on Wednesday before extending its losses on Thursday.

Shares worth Rs 4.61 billion were traded during the session. Only 42 companies posted gains, while the share prices of 229 companies declined. The prices of six companies remained unchanged.

Investors appear to be disappointed despite expectations that the new government would help improve market sentiment. Hopes that the market would rally following the announcement of the monetary policy have also failed to materialise.

Although the government has repeatedly stated that it is committed to working closely with the private sector to support economic recovery, investors have yet to regain confidence, keeping the market under sustained selling pressure.
